John Leech MP takes local asylum cases to the top

John meeting with Adela and her supporters last year

Local MP John Leech will be meeting with Immigration Minister Phil Woolas next week to discuss high profile local asylum cases.

John Leech has asked for the meeting to discuss 9 year old Burnage resident Tony Lola, who along with his mother is threatened with deportation to a volatile and dangerous situation in DR Congo. Tony was sent to the UK 3 years ago to join his mother after having been held in police custody at the age of just 5 years old.

John has been walking on behalf of Tony and his mother for some time, having recently presented a petition in Parliament calling for the Home Office to grant them leave to remain. He also brought Tony and a group of other children from Didsbury C of E primary school along with church representatives, to the Department for Children, Schools and Families to deliver handwritten letters of support.

John also wants to raise the ongoing case of Adela Mugabo, a constituent who is facing deportation to Rwanda despite serious concerns about her safety and access to medical treatment.

John Leech said, "These two cases have united people across our region. Local schools and Churches are supporting Tony Lola and his family, and I have received hundreds of signatures backing Adela's application to remain in the UK . Many of my constituents are very angry about the prospect of vulnerable people, who are positively contributing to our area being deported to war-torn environments, where their safety is compromised."

"I really hope that Phil Woolas will take on board our concerns and act to halt these deportations. The Government has a duty to protect people like Adela and Tony, and I will continue to campaign on their behalf in any way I can."
