John Leech MP Helps Sort Out the Bogus from the Benevolent
12.00.00am GMT Wed 10th Jan 2007
Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, John Leech, is advising local residents to avoid bogus charities in order to beat sick criminals who prey on people's generosity.
Whilst there are still many charities working to benefit the poor and needy, there are also increasing numbers of fraudsters who sell-on donations and pocket the proceeds.
As the appearance of the genuine and the bogus charities is becoming increasingly similar Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester, Withington John Leech is bidding to help local people avoid the fraudsters by offering some advice on how to spot the difference.
John Leech MP said:
"If you only make one resolution this year, make it carrying out these few simple checks next time a clothing leaflet drops through your letterbox."
"The main give away is the registration number. A genuine charity will have a specific charity number, so if the organisation is registered with Companies House then it's a definitely a business not a charity."
Mr Leech's advice also suggests you be suspicious of the wording:
"Phrases like 'poor families in Eastern Europe/ the Third World' are non-specific so it's always better to concentrate on the name of the charity."
"You should also check the contact details on the form. If there's no landline number or address then this is often a sign that they don't want to answer questions."
John Leech is determined that the fraudsters can be beaten, adding:
"We can sort out the real charities from businesses just out to make a quick buck out of generosity, and stop charities losing out."
If in doubt it's suggested that you play it safe and take your donations straight to your local charity shop.
Charity numbers can be checked with the Charity Commission either by calling 0845 3000 218 or on-line at www.charitycommission.gov.uk .
