A new memorial to honour the civilians who died in the second world war in Manchester has been welcomed by Liberal Democrat City Centre Councillor Marc Ramsbottom.

Designs for the memorial proposed for Piccadilly Gardens have been submitted to the Council's Planning Department for approval. Cllr Ramsbottom is pleased that some 12 months after Lib Dems proposed to memorial in the Council Chamber that the scheme is now getting off the ground.

"It is only right and proper that we should honour and remember those civilians in Manchester who died during the second world war and I welcome this memorial right in the heart of Manchester. It will be a fitting tribute to their memory." he said

The innovative design will be a metal tree, situated amongst other trees in Piccadilly Gardens, with the names of those who died carved into the trunk.

(NOTE: Cllr Ramsbottom will be available for photographs at the site of the proposed memorial if required and by arrangement).
