Former Rochdale MP Sir Cyril Smith has died at the age of 82.
The veteran Liberal politician died on Friday morning in his sleep, his family said.
He had been living in a nursing home in Rochdale in recent months after suffering ill health related to old age.
His funeral will take place on Monday the 13th of September.
Commenting on the death of Sir Cyril Smith, Manchester Lib Dem Councillor Simon Ashley said,
"Sir Cyril Smith was a champion for Rochdale and a formidable campaigner for the Liberal Democrats. His death is a huge loss to the party. On behalf of the Manchester party, my condolences go out to his brother Norman and his family at this difficult time."
