Manchester Liberal Democrat Team Offer "Change that Works for You"

Manchester's 33 Liberal Democrat Councillors have launched their Manifesto for the 2010 local elections (available here http://tiny.cc/swa2h ).

"Change that works for you in Manchester" spells out the changes that a Liberal Democrat Council would make. There are 5 major pledges:

1) Cut Council Tax by £51 for a Band D property.

2) Cut waste, including ending the Council Leader's Chauffeur-driven car, and claiming back £421,000 owed by other councils.

3) Lobby for the return of £82million GMP Funding, which would pay for over 500 more police on our streets.

4) Spend over £1million extra on gritting and improving our roads.

5) Reverse the plans to close Ewing school; and cut truancy levels.

Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Simon Ashley said:

"Labour have grown tired and arrogant in power. A City Council run by the Liberal Democrats would be different. It would save every Council Tax payer money. It wouldn't close excellent schools. It would stop wasting money on Chauffeurs and subsidising richer Councils. It wouldn't turn a blind eye to Labour's massive police funding cuts. It would give local people more say over their lives and their neighbourhoods."

Cllr Ashley added:

Manchester Lib Dems Offer a Real Alternative to Arrogant & Centralised Labour, Says Lib Dem Leader Cllr Simon Ashley

"People in Manchester know that year in, year out, only the Lib Dems can beat Labour. The Tories haven't won an election in the City since 1992, 18 long years ago. The Greens haven't got a single councillor. There are 33 Liberal Democrat Councillors and an MP, John Leech. In Manchester, a Green or Tory vote is a wasted vote!"

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Shannon said:

"This Manifesto for 2010 shows that there is a better way. Manchester's right-wing Labour Council supports ID cards and opposed the Sustainable Communities Bill. They are also far too close to property developers, having taken around £37,000 from developers to pay for Labour election leaflets. It's Time for a Change in Manchester!"
