Unemployment is rising three times quicker in Manchester than the North West as a whole, says Cllr Ashley
Latest jobless figures show that Manchester is performing less well than Greater Manchester, the North West and the UK as a whole. In the past year, unemployment in the city has risen by 10%, compared to the Greater Manchester average (8.1%), the North West Region (3.3%) and the UK (6%).
Meanwhile, the wider International Labour Organisation (ILO) measure of unemployment, rose by 43,000 in the three months to the end of February 2010 to 2.5 million. The unemployment rate now stands at 8%, the highest since 1996 - the Office for National Statistics said.
Manchester Lib Dem Leader Simon Ashley said today,
"Labour are clearly failing both locally and nationally. Unemployment in Manchester has gone up by three times more than across the North West as a whole, whilst national unemployment is the highest since Labour came to power in 1997. Labour have nothing new to offer the city or the country.
