Nick Clegg to south Manchester today ahead of the first of the three televised leader's debates, welcomed by Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate John Leech.
Nick took time out of his preparation schedule for this evening's leader's debate to visit Mauldeth Road Primary School in Ladybarn. Nick Clegg and John Leech were accompanied by Withington Councillors Simon Wheale and Brendon Jones who are school governors at Mauldeth Road.
Cllr Wheale said:
"It was a great honour to welcome Nick to the school and he was very impressed with the excellent work children are doing at this school.
Nick and John both received a massive welcome, with a huge number of supporters to wish Nick well ahead of the debate tonight. Also present was the BBC's Political Editor, Nick Robinson.
Nick, who speaks five languages fluently, was grilled by the children and was even asked a question by one of the children in Spanish!
John Leech said:
"Nick received an excellent welcome; many of our supporters were delighted to have met him and to have had the opportunity to wish him well ahead of the eagerly anticipated debate tonight.
"There is a great deal of excitement ahead of tonight's debate and I know Nick will come out of it very well. Many voters I have met on the streets have been telling me they are fed up of being told that Lib Dems can't win round here, when it is quite clear we are winning here right now!
"Nick used this visit to demonstrate how serious our campaign is. People want real change and the Liberal Democrats can deliver it; they won't be taken in by Labour's scaremongering about voting Lib Dem and getting a Tory government- we all know local Lib Dems have a record of standing up for the area."
Nick Clegg commented:
"It was great to meet the children and they even grilled me in Spanish which I wasn't expecting. As well as being excellent fun, it was really good preparation for the debate!"
