Fallowfield's Dave Page and Cllr Paul Shannon Welcome Unveiling of New Clock in Platt Fields Park

Platt Fields Park has kicked off a year of centenary celebrations with the unveiling of a new clock on the boathouse today. The local voluntary residents' group, the Friends of Platt Fields, organised the event in conjunction with the Council's parks and leisure department, and arranged funding for the clock from Sainsburys.

Platt Fields became a municipal park in 1910, when a public campaign by Mr William Royle of Rusholme led its purchase by the City Council. The Friends of Platt Fields have recently been awarded a £4,850 grant by the Lib Dem Councillors in Rusholme towards the Park's 2010 centenary celebrations.

Fallowfield's Lib Dem Campaigner Dave Page said:

"The clock on the boathouse has been missing for around 50 years - nobody can quite remember when it went! However, even in these days when everybody's got a mobile phone to tell them the time, it's still very nice to see it back. Friends of Platt Fields have organised a great series of events throughout the year to celebrate the Park's centenary."

Rusholme Councillor Paul Shannon said:

"As a member of the Friends of Platt Fields since 1999, I'm really proud that there are to be such wonderful community celebrations around the centenary of the park. This beautiful new clock on the boathouse is the icing on the cake! "
