In a letter to the local MP, the Head of Highways Services spelled out that the pedestrian safety issue had not been solved by the construction of the island, outside of the Old House at Home pub, Burton Road, in Spring 2009.

Highways are now actively looking at installing a new zebra crossing or pedestrian island further up the road. This follows an 8 month campaign by John Leech MP and local campaigner Rob Mackle, for a proper pedestrian crossing at this location.

Rob Mackle said "We have been campaigning for a full pedestrian crossing here since early 2009, following complaints from local residents. It was soon clear the new traffic island was dangerous and completely ineffective at improving road safety. Since it's introduction local people are up in arms at the Council's failure to rectify the problem."

Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Year for 2008, John Leech MP added, "Simply put, the island needs to be removed and a proper pedestrian crossing installed, possibly just yards down the road. Public safety should be worth the money, especially since we have been campaigning for this for many months and several accidents have already happened."
