Lib Dems Leader Simon Ashley is supporting plans to make Manchester a Host City
Manchester Liberal Democrats have welcomed a report by Council Chief Executive Sir Howard Bernstein which spells out the Council's possible financial responsibilities should Manchester be a host city if England successfully win the bid to hold the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
A couple of months ago, the Council agreed in principle to support the bid. This secret report was agreed by last months Executive, and spells out the costs of bidding to be the host for two groups. It explains possible commercial opportunities which might reduce those costs, and proposes setting up a Council reserve now that the Council contributes to yearly to help cover costs in 9 or 13 years time.
Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Simon Ashley said today,
"Manchester Lib Dems support the Council underwriting the costs of being a host city should England host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022. Could you imagine a World Cup in England without games at Eastlands or Old Trafford? It is the Council's job to make this happen."
Culture spokesperson John Commons added,
"Of course, the Council Tax payer needs to know that we are doing all we can to minimise the costs of underwriting these two events. They are going to cost money, but the Lib Dems believe that it should be money well spent."
