Liberal Democrats Support a Parish Council for Northenden
Over 60% of responders to a consultation said they wanted a Parish Council in Northenden, Manchester - yet for the third time Labour Councillors have said "No". At this weeks' powerful Constitutional Committee, Labour narrowly voted down a Lib Dem plan to set up a Parish Council. The only Northenden Councillor present was Cllr Martin Eakins.
Cllr Eakins, who has led the campaign for the Parish Council said:
"This is the third time this has come up at a Council Committee, the third time the Lib Dems have argued that the people should be listened to, and the third time Labour have said 'No'. The Labour Council asked if the people of Northenden want a Parish Council, and they do. What part of 'Yes' does Labour not understand?"
Cllr Eakins added:
"The Local Government Act 2007 obliges the Council should take into account representations received - by ignoring the results of the consultation like this, the Council could be breaking the law."
A final decision will be taken at the December meeting of Full Council.
