Withington MP, John Leech, has this week pledged his support for south Manchester newsagents at a House of Commons meeting arranged to discuss the industry's future.
Speaking after the meeting, at which Mr Leech met with the National Federation of Retail Newsagents and local newsagents to discuss the challenges that local retailers are facing, he said:
"Local newsagents are often at the very heart of the community, yet many retailers tell me that they are feeling the squeeze of the supermarkets and the policies of newspaper wholesalers."
"I was also speaking to one local newsagent who was really concerned about anti-social behaviour outside her shop. I think it's clear that our newsagents need much more help to get through these tough times."
Mr Leech, who has also supported a parliamentary motion hitting out at the decision by the Guardian Media Group to cut jobs at the Manchester Evening News and its weekly newspaper group continued:
"Across south Manchester local residents are still reeling from the closures of local post offices, so any loss of their newsagents would be devastating. I'm therefore pleased to have met with retailers and the National Federation of Retail Newsagents to look at ways that I can help locally and in parliament."
