Manchester Withington MP John Leech is backing a campaign to call on all nations to endorse the international moratorium on whaling. The campaign, led by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), received a boost as John Leech hosted an event in Parliament to raise awareness of the issue.

MPs were encouraged to show their support by making a "whale-tail" pose and upload it to the Tails for Whales website.

John has also set up a competition for local youngsters to make the best "whale-tail" pose in the constituency, and has written to local schools to encourage participation. As well as being in with a chance of winning a prize, their photos can be uploaded to the Tails for Whales website to show that they care about animal welfare.

John Leech said:

"This is an easy and fun way for everybody to show that they care about animal cruelty. Whaling is wrong and totally unnecessary, and I encourage all local residents to upload their "whale tail" photos to the website, so that we can put pressure on those countries who continue this practice."

Notes for editors:

1) Entries to John Leech's competition for local youngsters should be sent to Rob Eatough at eatoughr@parliament.uk, and uploaded to the Tails for Whales website which can be found at www.tailsforwhales.org.

2) The Tails for Whales project has been supported by model and presenter Twiggy as well as comedienne Jo Brand.
