Didsbury West Lib Dem Candidate Lianne Williams Wants Airport Included in Manchester's Climate Change Action Plan
Didsbury West Liberal Democrat candidate Lianne Williams has criticised Labour's plans to tackle climate change in Manchester without setting targets for Manchester Airport! According to the Council's own figures, Manchester currently has the highest CO2 emissions in the country, yet Labour have refused to include the airport in Manchester's proposals for action on climate change.
A 13-page Council report launches Manchester's "Climate Change Call to Action", but devotes just 9 lines to Manchester Airport.
The report accepts that global rates of Air Traffic growth are unsustainable, but then concludes that "it is not a realistic option for individual airports or cities to suppress their growth unilaterally ahead of international agreements that lead to orderly reductions in overall emissions."
Lianne Williams has voiced her disappointment:
"No climate change policy worth its salt would let Manchester Airport off the hook. Manchester Labour's "do nothing" line on the Airport reminds me of George Bush's line on Kyoto - that no-one had to act until everyone had signed up. It is an abdication of leadership."
Council officials have also confirmed to that none of the £1million budget to tackle climate change in this year's budget had been spent.
Lianne concluded:
"As we near the end of this financial year, it is a scandal that the Council have failed to spend their own budget to tackle Climate Change! Labour are all spin and no action."
