300% Heating Price Hike Condemned by Manchester Liberal Democrats
"I am appalled by the price hike from Contour Housing for personal heating in Steven Court which is scheduled to increase by 300% from £5.70pw to £17.00pw", says Whalley Range Liberal Democrat Councillor John Grant.
Tenants in Steven Court in Chorlton have just received notice of rent increases from their social landlord, Contour Housing Group Ltd. Along with this came news of a price rise for the "personal heating charge". It will go up from £5.70pw to £17pw. This covers the cost of heating the communal areas and pipes which run through the apartments. Even if it is turned off at the front door tenants will still have to pay the full amount.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillor John Grant said:
"This is scandalous and I have made my views known to Contour and asked for an explanation. I know fuel prices have gone up maybe 35% but this is a 300% price hike. Perhaps £5.70 is not enough or low by comparison with other properties managed by social landlords but a rise of this sort all at once is completely unacceptable and hits the poorest hardest. It's not as though tenants can control it or decide not to use it. They are charged whether they use it or not. This does not look like good management of the business by this housing association."
