Gorton North Liberal Democrat Councillor Wendy Helsby has slammed thieves who have made away with the the last wheels to be produced by the Gorton Tank.
Gorton Tank, based in Openshaw, built wheels for trains. It opened in 1848 and closed in 1963. The last wheels were place on top of the Co-op Pioneer when it was built, but were removed when the new market was refurbished. Local Councillors had asked Council Officers, because of their historic significance, to keep then secure.
Cllr Helsby said:
"I am absolutely fuming. These wheels might only be worth a few hundred quid melted down to these thieves, but they symbolise an important part of Gorton's history."
Wendy, who was born and brought up in Gorton, added:
"I told Council Officers to keep an eye on these wheels, and they didn't. Its not as if you could walk down the street with one of them under your arm!"
