Lib Dem Licensing Spokesperson Cllr John Commons has Called for Action to Prevent Taxi Fires in Manchester

Councillor John Commons, Licensing Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats on Manchester City Council, has urged the Council's Environmental Services/ Licensing Unit to respond locally following a number of taxi cab fires in London.

Cllr Commons has asked Manchester Council to look into concerns that, following SEVEN L. T. Int. TX4 Hackney Carriage Vehicles bursting into flames recently in London, the Council here should ensure that all similar vehicles in the Manchester fleet be examined urgently, with the help of Greater Manchester Fire Authority.

Councillor John Commons said:

"For the safety of taxi users and drivers, it is important that this matter be looked at extremely urgently. London have already taken over 600 such vehicles off the road for additional inspection. Manchester City Council should also seek advice from colleagues at Greater Manchester Fire Authority."

"Liberal Democrats are insistent that the City Council cannot afford to wait and see if there is a tragedy before acting."
