"More People than Ever Will be Living in Fuel Poverty" - John Leech MP

August 5, 2008 12:00 AM

John Leech MP has hit out at news that an estimated 4.5 million households are now living in fuel poverty, according to a report by Ofgem. This news comes as British Gas, who recently revealed they would be increasing their prices by 35%, held an extravagant party for staff, costing a quarter million pounds, in order to explain why the global price of energy has increased.

Withington MP John Leech said:

"This Government promised that by 2010 they would have eradicated fuel poverty. However, fuel poverty has actually increased, and the fact that this has happened under a Labour Government is an absolute disgrace."

"I have had countless constituents contact me because they are really struggling to pay their gas bills, especially with the ever-rising cost of living. And now this news will mean that more people than ever, both in my constituency and all over the country will be living in fuel poverty. It is shameful."
