Manchester Liberal Democrats Oppose Labour's Housing Cuts
Manchester's Labour bosses have tamely accepted Government cuts of £13 million to Manchester's housing market renewal funds.
Manchester Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson, Cllr Iain Donaldson, slated Labour's failure to stand up to their Government over the cuts, stating that "What is meant by a 'balanced programme' is meek acceptance of devastating cuts by the Labour Government!"
Cllr Donaldson stated:
"The City of Manchester 28,000 people on its re-housing register, of whom 18,000 are in crowded or unsuitable accommodation and nearly 1,000 are registered homeless."
"Labour are now lowering aspirations to tackle these issues rather than challenging the Governments cuts. The implications of this decision are that the poorest, oldest and weakest in our communities will be worse hit."
"What's more, at a time when people in the building trade are being laid off in large numbers, these cuts will only serve to worsen that situation here in Manchester. Labour should reverse these shameful spending cuts."
