Gordon Brown Cancels 3,000 Jobs in Deprived East Manchester
Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Simon Ashley has given his reaction to the news that Gordon Brown has cancelled regeneration and 3000 jobs in East Manchester in favour of vague promises of alternative investment.
Cllr Ashley said:
"Labour's Casino alternative plan is pure spin. It is a sham. This will not replace the jobs now lost. From talking to Council Officers, it seems that only the extension of the life of New East Manchester and the £10million from English Partnerships is guaranteed. The rest is a re-hash of previous announcements and possibilities far into the future and dependent on the private sector."
Cllr Ashley added:
"East Manchester's unemployment rate is 2.5 times the national average. Gordon Brown has single handedly stopped the creation of 3000 jobs and £265m of investment in East Manchester. Manchester won this competition fair and square - the Prime Minister has sold Manchester out."
Cllr Ashley concluded:
"Here is a real test for Council Leader Richard Leese. For months he has threatened legal action. If he doesn't follow through, people will think that he is putting the interests of the Labour Party ahead of the interests of the people of Manchester."
