Nick Clegg MP is the New Liberal Democrat Party Leader

Manchester Liberal Democrats have welcomed Nick Clegg's election as Leader of the Liberal Democrat party. Councillor Simon Ashley, Manchester Lib Dem Leader, stated that the party's leadership election had given the wider membership a full say in choosing the new leader.

Councillor Ashley said:

"Unlike Labour, the Liberal Democrats give every party member one vote each, of equal weight. There are no Gordon Brown-style "coronations" in our party! It's clear that the Liberal Democrats and our new leader have been strengthened by having a contested leadership election."

He concluded:

"Now is the time for the party to unite behind Nick's leadership, to aim our fire at a tired Labour government and a Tory party that is all style and no substance."
