Councillor Alison Firth calls for Support for Victims of Natural Disaster in Bangladesh
Manchester Liberal Democrats have called for support to be given to those affected by the cyclone and terrible floods in Bangladesh. Liberal Democrat Shadow Executive Member Councillor Alison Firth requested an urgent statement on the matter, outlining what the City Council could do to help.
In reply, the Council Leader Richard Leese has said that the Council's website and broadcast facilities will be used to encourage financial contributions to the Disaster Emergency Committee. He also promised to maintain liaison with Manchester communities to ensure families and individuals with friends and family affected by the disaster get any necessary support.
Cllr Firth said:
"Many people in Manchester have been affected by this natural disaster in Bangladesh. Many Bengalis live in Manchester and some have families back home who are affected by loss of property or even loss of life. It is right that we should do all we can to bring food, clean drinking water, medicine and shelter to those who survived."
Cyclone Sidr struck last week, killing thousands and leaving countless others homeless. The Government of Bangladesh has called for more aid for tens of thousands of cyclone survivors.
