John Leech MP is Campaigning for Less Packaging in Supermarkets - up to 40% of it ends up in Landfill!

John Leech, Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, is backing parliamentary moves to cut down on the amount of packaging used by manufacturers and retailers.

John Leech is supporting a bill introduced by fellow Lib Dem MP, Jo Swinson, which would set up a national body to promote and enforce packaging reduction. The bill also includes binding targets for reducing packaging, to replace the existing, voluntary, ones.

John Leech MP said:

"As much as 40 per cent of supermarket packaging cannot be recycled and has to go to landfill sites. Despite increases in recycling, domestic waste has increased by a fifth since 1997, largely due to the over packaging of goods. This bill would give shoppers the right to send their packaging back to the manufacturers, who would then surely start to get the message!"
