Manchester Labour Failed to Meet Recycling Targets
A secret report to Labour Councillors admits that the Council has lost £650,000 for failing to meet its own PSA (Public Service Agreement) recycling target of 28%. According to official Council figures, the current recycling rate is about 21%, which is below the national average. Labour have now set a "more realistic" target of 22%. The national target is 40% by 2010.
This comes on top of recent figures that shows that Manchester has the highest CO2 emissions in the country, of 2.6 tonnes per person. Again, these are the Council's own figures.
Lib Dem Leader Cllr Simon Ashley said today:
"Labour claim that Manchester is going to be Britain's Greenest city by 2010. Given where we are now on recycling and CO2 emission, that is not remotely possible, and Labour know it."
Cllr Ashley added:
"Labour are misleading the people of Manchester and their incompetence is losing the city money. They need to be heading towards the national target of 40%, not settling for a pathetic 22% that they know they can meet."
