PM Gordon Brown Must Replace Manchester's Lost £265Million Investment
"The question Gordon Brown has to answer is: "Will his Labour Government give Manchester the £265million investment we will lose if he stops the Super Casino going ahead?" asked Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Simon Ashley.
Cllr Ashley urged the Council not to give up on regeneration plans for East Manchester even though Gordon Brown's PR spin doctors have said the Super Casino is "dead in the water". Manchester's City Treasurer has confirmed to Lib Dem Councillors that £238,000 of Council Tax payers money has gone towards the Casino bid.
Cllr Ashley stated:
"Personally, I think spending £238,000 to lever in £265million is money well spent. However, that money goes down the drain if Labour PM Gordon Brown continues to think Manchester's bid is "dead in the water."
"I am fed up with unelected Lords and national politicians with no Manchester connection telling us how we should create jobs in our city. Manchester won the process set up by these politicians fair and square, and now the Prime Minister is moving the goalposts yet again."
Cllr Ashley concluded:
"This is a wider principle than just a casino, it is about local Councils having the power to run their own affairs without interference. If Gordon Brown has a moral objection to a Casino development then so be it - but he also has a moral obligation to the people of Manchester to replace the £265million-worth of investment they are losing because of his actions."
