Cllr John Cameron Supports Actions to Help "Remploy" Workers
Liberal Democrat Councillor for Burnage, John Cameron, has taken up the cause of the thousands of highly skilled disabled workers whose jobs are under threat due to the factory closure programme announced by Remploy on behalf of the government.
43 of the existing 83 Remploy factories are earmarked for the axe, including both of the factories in Greater Manchester and half of all those in the North West.
Cllr John Cameron has written to the Chief Executive of Manchester City Council to request that the Council look into procuring more goods from Remploy, to ease their current financial difficulties.
He said:
"Remploy factories provide the opportunity to work in skilled jobs, with trades union representation and at a wage at least £1.00 above the minimum wage for many disabled people."
"The government is right to try and integrate disabled workers into the mainstream jobs market. However, one size does not fit all. The training and support provided in the Remploy factories makes the difference between working and unemployment for many. The work they do contributes to the economy and it would be tragic if some of these workers were to end up on benefits due to the government's inflexible approach."
