John Leech Praises Card Scheme for Teenage Cancer Patients

January 15, 2007 12:00 AM

John Leech, Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, is co-sponsoring a Parliamentary Motion in support of Christie Hospital's pioneering 'don't hide wear it with pride' ID card scheme for cancer patients who are turned away from nightspots because of their shaved heads and hats.

Commenting on the campaign to make pub and club owners in South Manchester and across the country sign up to the scheme, John Leech MP said:

"I am outraged that some establishments refuse entry to people who are wearing hats or head-scarves following surgery or chemotherapy. It shows a total lack of compassion."

"Now patients will be able to show bouncers their special Christie Hospital ID card and will be given more understanding treatment."

"Christie Hospital is at the forefront of cancer treatment and care once again with this pioneering scheme."

"I am calling for all pub and club owners to sign up to the scheme so that young people suffering from cancer will be allowed entry into nightspots of their choice."

Notes to Editors:

Early Day Motion 596

TEENAGE CANCER TRUST IDENTITY CARD SCHEME 10.01.2007

Stunell, Andrew

That this House notes that six teenagers a day are diagnosed with cancer;

notes that the diagnosis of cancer in young people is both devastating and

disruptive to normal life and in particular that the effect of treatment may

mean that they are not always able to comply with dress codes for bars and

clubs; further notes the success of the pioneering Don't hide it, wear it

with pride identity card scheme allowing patients access to such facilities;

congratulates the Christie Crew for initiating this pioneering scheme;

welcomes the Teenage Cancer Trust's roll-out of the scheme nationwide; and

invites landlords and proprietors to sign up to it forthwith.
