Cllr Paul Shannon with Jo Swinson MP, a Lib Dem Shadow Green Minister, Marching for Action on Climate Change
Manchester Liberal Democrats joined thousands of other climate change campaigners at the weekend's London rally calling for action to tackle the effects of climate change.
Manchester campaigners including Lib Dem Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Shannon joined 20,000 others to demand urgent action on climate change ahead of this week's UN Conference in Nairobi. United Nations climate talks involving 189 nations are starting in the Kenyan capital to negotiate a successor to the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol beyond 2012.
Councillor Shannon said:
"Action is needed now to combat global warming. The Government needs to bring legislation on the issue as soon as possible so we can cut UK carbon emissions. Every one of us has a role to play in helping to reduce greenhouse gases."
He concluded:
"The Liberal Democrats support a fairer, greener and simpler tax system. We will cut the basic rate of income tax by 2p in the pound, and tax climate change by taxing pollution. By switching to green taxes on pollution, Liberal Democrats will encourage people to save money by switching to greener living."
