Manchester Liberal Democrats support Trams to Wythenshawe Hospital
Manchester's Metrolink tramway system may never reach Wythenshawe Hospital, according to information in a report at the top-level Council Executive Committee. Many believed that the recent Metrolink funding announcement would bring trams to the famous hospital, as promised in the original "Big Bang" six years ago. But at the meeting, Lib Dem Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Shannon asked why trams to Wythenshawe Hospital were not included in the recent Metrolink funding announcement.
The report, from Chief Executive Sir Howard Bernstein, makes clear that the recent announcement of £538 million (Phase 3a) with a 2007 bid for £450million (Phase 3b) will still not bring trams to Wythenshawe Hospital.
Councillor Paul Shannon, who is Manchester Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader, stated:
"This is unacceptable. Anyone who has ever visited friends or relatives in Wythenshawe Hospital knows how difficult it is to park there, whilst buses to the hospital are unreliable and not frequent enough."
"Manchester Liberal Democrats welcome the Government's recent announcement that Metrolink is "Back-on-Track". But we are deeply disappointed that they did not include any funding for trams to Wythenshawe Hospital."
"It will take many years to build Metrolink Phases 3a & 3b, so it is terrible news to find out that these phases will not include trams to the hospital."
Councillor Shannon concluded:
"Patients in South Manchester were promised trams to help them access Wythenshawe Hospital. Manchester Liberal Democrats will not give up the fight! We think the successful cross-party "Back-on-Track" campaign should continue, until all the new tram routes have been secured."
