Labour confusion over ASBO Statistics

March 22, 2006 12:00 AM

Labour Housing Bosses have furiously denied figures which show that two-thirds of ASBOs on young people in Manchester are breached. The figures, produced by the Council's own officers, were issued last week as part of the Council's three year Children and Young People plan.

Previous Council figures put the Youth Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) breach rate at about half.

Manchester Lib Dem Leader Cllr Simon Ashley said:

"Labour are not being effective in tackling Anti-Social behaviour on Manchester's estates. First they cut funding to Greater Manchester Police, and now Labour spin doctors are trashing figures produced by independent Council Officers. Whether the youth ASBO breach rate is half or two-thirds, it is simply too high."

Cllr Ashley added:

"The Lib Dems would not over rely on ASBOs, like Labour do. We want to see earlier intervention through Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs), which have a far lower breach rate than ASBOs, and don't cost thousands in court fees."
