Lib Dem Councillor Joy Winder is concerned that the character of the Whalley Range Conservation Area is being allowed to crumble and decay by property owners who are keen to demolish rather than repair and restore. Properties at 33 & 35 Demesne Road are the latest houses of character now under threat.
Cllr Winder said:
"We are doing everything we can as Councillors to conserve the area and ensure it retains its unique character. Sadly the council has only limited powers. It sometimes seems that property owners are happier to see decay and demolition than repair, restoration and conversion."
She added:
"It is for just these reasons that Lib Dems want to see the government cut VAT on repair and restoration to 5% rather than the present 17.5%. This would provide a financial incentive to owners and developers, and also send them a clear message that we value property with character and do not want to see it demolished. It is a pity Labour were not prepared to support this motion when it was debated in the Council chamber recently."
