John Leech MP has scored a big success in the Liberal Democrat campaign to banish piles of pigeon droppings from the pavements of South Manchester.
The pigeons, which currently roost under Railway Bridges over School Lane, Brayside Road and Southlea Road, causing their droppings to pile up all over the pavements below, will soon have to go elsewhere where they will cause less of a nuisance to pedestrians. A Liberal Democrat petition of over 125 residents was handed in to Network Rail by the campaigning MP and Burnage Councillor Rod Isherwood, demanding that they install nets under their bridges to stop the birds roosting. The Council's Environmental Health Department also got involved, at John Leech's request. Network Rail have now bowed to the pressure and have agreed to put up the nets.
John Leech MP said:
"Piles of pigeon droppings all over the pavement can be dangerous as they are very slippery, especially after rain, and are disgusting for all the pedestrians passing below. Thanks to all the local people who signed our petition Network Rail have now agreed to take action to stop this happening. This will make a big improvement to the local environment and local people's quality of life."
Councillor Rod Isherwood added:
"We are delighted that the bridges will now be netted. Concerted action from the Liberal Democrats, Local Residents and Environmental Health have paid off for the good of our area."
