Rusholme Liberal Democrat Councillor Lynne Williams has given her backing to a new bus service connecting Moss Side with Longsight, following the recent decision to stop the 53 service coming to Moss Side.
At a Transport meeting today, Councillors heard that bus links between Moss Side and Longsight had an 80-year history. They therefore agreed to fund a replacement service, called the 54.
Lynne Williams said:
"Many local people in Rusholme and Moss Side are annoyed that since 29th January, the 53 has stopped serving streets such as Great Western Street and Moss Lane East. That's why I welcome today's decision to begin a new replacement service, the new 54 route which will go from Hulme to Moss Side and Longsight."
She continued:
"I would prefer that FIRST had not changed the route of the 53 bus service. Although its reliability is patchy, at every 20 minutes it is more frequent that the new 54 service, which will be every half-hour. However, this is better than nothing and I urge local people to support this new bus service, which will on a 6-month trial."
