Over 600 Liberal Democrat members from all over the North West crowded into Manchester Town Hall last night to hear the three candidates for the leadership of the party speak & answer questions.
Rival candidates Sir Ming Campbell, Simon Hughes and Chris Huhne did battle as they each set out their platform for the party leadership.
Party members have until next Wednesday 1st March to return their ballot papers, with the announcement of the new party leader due the next day.
Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Simon Ashley said:
"Local Lib Dem members welcomed this opportunity to meet the three leadership candidates here in Manchester. Each candidate spoke well, and there were probing questions from party members on topics such as education, civil liberties and Europe."
He concluded:
"With our stunning victory in the recent Parliamentary by-election, and opinion poll ratings on the up, it's clear that the future looks bright for the Liberal Democrats."
