Merging Small Trust Funds Makes Sense

February 15, 2006 12:00 AM

Manchester Liberal Democrats' Arts Spokesperson Cllr John Commons has welcomed proposals to merge dormant trust funds to create the "Manchester Fund."

Cllr Commons, who is Lib Dem Shadow Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and the Arts, said today:

"The plans to endorse arrangements for the release of some £350,000-worth of dormant trust funds to form the "Manchester Fund" make sense."

A large proportion of the initial investment of dormant funds will be ring-fenced for education and life long learning activities within the Manchester Fund.

Cllr Commons today stressed the need to make use of the dormant funds in as close a way as possible to the philanthropic reasons these monies were given:

"Money left lying in a dormant fund is no way forward for the benefit of our local communities - this plan, which will yield approximately £40,000 per annum, will release a welcome injection of funds towards Culture Sport and the Arts, youth activities and life-long learning. Liberal Democrats support this investment in our voluntary and community organisations for the benefit of Manchester residents."
