Manchester Liberal Democrat Group Leader Simon Ashley has slammed Gorton MP Gerald Kaufman for harming Manchester's chances of securing the BBC's new headquarters within the city.
Just weeks before the BBC announce whether the preferred site will be in Manchester or Salford, Kaufman has stated that the movement of 1,800 BBC staff from London "won't create any jobs."
Cllr Ashley said today:
"Gerald Kaufman is wrong and his comments will harm Manchester's chances of securing these extra jobs. An extra 1,800 well-paid media jobs in itself will help the Manchester economy and create new jobs in the media sector and support services."
Cllr Ashley added:
"Perhaps if Mr Kaufman cannot say anything constructive, he should shut up and stop undermining the Council's attempts to secure these jobs. Mr Kaufman is giving the BBC the impression that Manchester is not bothered. Nothing could be further from the truth."
