Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Lynne Williams has welcomed a targeted policing operation on the Anson Estate in the Longsight area of the City.
Greater Manchester Police and Manchester City Council joined forces this week to clean the streets of criminals, untaxed cars, anti-social behaviour and litter.
Councillor Williams stated:
"I welcome this action to tackle crime on our local estate. As Councillors my colleagues and I have made several complaints about Anti-Social Behaviour and other problems on the Anson Estate in the ward we represent."
In a two-day operation, police officers worked alongside Environmental Services, the Neighbour Nuisance Team, Housing Officers and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service on the Anson estate.
So far around 5 arrests have been made, for a variety of drugs, driving and immigration offences.
The operation began at 7am on Tuesday,13 December 2005, when three men were arrested in search warrants at three addresses.
A mobile police station was then set up on Meldon Road and staff from each agency set to work on a variety of projects to improve the area for local residents.
Five abandoned and untaxed vehicles were removed while housing officers patrolled the estate, giving out crime prevention advice and listening to residents' concerns about anti-social behaviour.
Manchester City Council's Environmental Services provided a 'clean team' to get rid of dog litter and rubbish from the estate, and overgrown trees and bushes were cut back.
Residents were also given free fire safety checks and advice from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, who fitted smoke alarms where necessary.
