Rusholme Liberal Democrat Councillor Paul Shannon has today praised Firefighters from Manchester who travelled to Pakistan to help the relief effort following the dreadful earthquake in the region on October 8th.
At least 80,000 people were killed, including 17,000 children killed whilst in school, and the death toll is continuing to rise.
At today's meeting of the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Authority, he welcomed a report from officials giving details of the relief effort undertaken by Fire Officers from Manchester.
Members of the Fire Authority were told that within 18 hours of the earthquake, a team of 6 Firefighters from Manchester had arrived in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, as part of a UK delegation. They were immediately deployed in the Search & Rescue operation, freeing a number of people trapped under wreckage.
Councillor Shannon, a member of the Fire Authority, said:
"I represent Rusholme ward, including parts of the Longsight district, where thousands of people have been affected by the great loss of life & destruction of property. Many local families have lost loved ones in the earthquake."
He concluded:
"As a member of the Fire Authority, I am proud that there are people walking the streets of Muzaffarabad who owe their lives to the efforts and courage of Firefighters from Manchester! I feel privileged to have met these Firefighters, whose heroism has inspired us all."
Members of the Greater Manchester Fire Authority unanimously agreed a vote of thanks to the Firefighters, following today's presentation.
