Cllr Simon Ashley welcomes Jawaid Chaudhry to the Liberal Democrats
Longtime Labour party activist and former Manchester Councillor Jawaid Chaudhry has torn up his Labour Party membership and applied to join the Liberal Democrats.
Jawaid said that his political outlook had not changed, but that the Labour Party had changed locally and nationally and was unrecognisable as the Party he joined over 20 years ago.
He said:
"Nationally, Tony Blair backed George Bush and led us to war in Iraq on a false prospectus. Locally, Labour has taken Manchester's diverse communities for granted for years and waste millions on pet projects like Urbis."
He added:
"Now, there is an alternative. Locally, the Liberal Democrats have 38 Councillors and represent two fifths of the city. They have a Manchester MP. They opposed the War, Tuition fees and would give local communities across Manchester more power over their lives. That is why I'm applying to join the Lib Dems in Manchester."
Lib Dem Leader Councillor Simon Ashley said:
"Jawaid Chaudhry is the latest example of a longtime Labour party member who has had enough of Tony Blair nationally and Richard Leese locally. He has applied to join the Liberal Democrats because we offer a united and credible alternative to Labour here in Manchester."
