Local Liberal Democrat Councillors have welcomed today's announcement that Platt Fields Park and Manley Park have been awarded "Green Flag" status for the first time. "Green Flag" awards are given for excellence in local parks.
Councillor John-Paul Wilkins representing Fallowfield said:
"This is great news for Platt Fields. Green spaces are so important for people living in densely populated South Manchester. I pay tribute to the Friends of Platt Fields, who have done such marvellous work over the years."
Whalley Range Councillor Joy Winder is thrilled:
"I am delighted that Manley Park has been recognised at last. The Friends of Manley Park deserve a pat on the back for all their hard work to help make this happen! This is good news for the people of Whalley Range."
Manchester Liberal Democrats would like to thank the City's Parks staff for the huge effort they put in to obtain these awards.
The Green Flag Award 2005/2006 scheme is the national standard for parks and green spaces across England and Wales. The award is managed by The Civic Trust on behalf of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Green Flag Advisory Board.
