Manchester Withington Liberal Democrat MP John Leech has joined forces with Rochdale MP Paul Rowen following the tragic death of three young children in a house fire in Rochdale.
They have co-sponsored an Early Day motion (EDM) which calls on the Government to make the landlord responsible for the fitting and checking of smoke alarms in properties they own.
John Leech said today, "The primary responsibility of any landlord is to make sure their tenants are safe. There are thousands of rented properties across South Manchester and I am hoping the Government will consider making landlords responsible for the installation and maintenance of smoke alarms."

The Early Day Motion reads,
That this House notes with regret the recent tragic death of three young children in a house fire in Rochdale, Greater Manchester and is saddened that although a smoke alarm was fitted, fire officers could find no battery; therefore calls on the Government to make it compulsory for
all landlords to fit and regularly check smoke alarms in all their properties; and congratulates the Manchester Evening News in conjunction with the Greater Manchester Fire Service for launching a campaign to ensure that the 200,000 properties in Greater Manchester which currently do not have smoke alarms have one fitted.
