CLLR SIMON ASHLEY, LEADER OF THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS IN MANCHESTER
Lib Dem Group leader Simon Ashley has welcomed a U turn by Manchester City Council who were refusing to make public the spend per child on School Meals.
A survey conducted by the Guardian last Thursday claimed that Manchester City Council knew the figure but had refused to disclose it. The Council also refused to let the paper know the percentage of children who had school meals.
Cllr Ashley wrote to the City Solicitor requesting the information and an explanation of why the information was not being made public.
Cllr Ashley said today, I am glad the council has performed a U turn and made this information
public. What worries me is that of those in the survey, only 14 Councils in the whole country spend less on school meals per head than Manchester does, and 63, or 80%, spend more."
Cllr Ashley added, "Jamie Oliver has started a legitimate debate about how much is spent
on school dinners. The people of Manchester now can see that we near the bottom of the national table, and that needs to change."
