A packed meeting of senior North West Liberal Democrats showed their anger at the proposals by the Labour Government to allow the Home Secretary to detain any British Citizen without charge, rebuttal or trial under the guise of Anti-Terror legislation.
Addressing the party's spring conference, Manchester City Council Shadow Executive Member, Cllr Iain Donaldson stated that "This proposal will fundamentally alter the freedoms established under the Magna Carta. For a thousand years, an Englishman has had the right to trial by jury, and now Labour intend to sweep away that important cornerstone of British Democracy."
"In December I successfully negotiated a notice of motion through Manchester City Council condemning the Government for imprisoning foreign nationals in Belmarsh Prison without charge or trial. The House of Lords ruled that the Government had acted in contravention of the European Convention on Human Rights. Today Labour want to extend that illegal legislation to cover all British Citizens."
"This is no longer a matter of party politics, today we are fighting for the basic human rights of all our citizens, and we must extend our campaign to draw all freedom loving people in this country to this cause!"
