Manley Park and Alexandra Park have become places where those who ride around on Go-Peds and Quad Bikes frighten local people. Whalley Range Liberal Democrat Councillor Joy Winder is leading a campaign to raise awareness about what you can and cannot do with these "toys" and so make the area safer.
Go-Peds and Quad Bikes were Christmas presents this year. What excitement to be given a powered scooter (Go-Ped) or a quad bike but is it clear where they can be used? Local people are being terrorised as these vehicles/toys are driven in a reckless way around local parks. The number of complaints continues to grow. The Council's Trading Standards Officers have said they will be vigilante and pursue any retailer selling these "toys" without giving proper safety warnings. The police have also responded to this latest craze with sensible legal advice and will follow up all complaints that they receive but they are asking for specific information from those who report the incident to assist them. Those who carry out this anti-social behaviour will find the police bearing down on them.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Joy Winder said, "The number of people who contact me and my colleagues indicates that there is a real problem. People are being frightened as they take a walk in one of our local parks. I worry that the people who bought the Go-Ped or Quad Bike were not properly informed about how and where these toys could be used safely. They are not allowed on roads, cycle tracks or pavements. To travel with a powered vehicle on the road you need to be over 16yrs and have a licence, insurance and a helmet. These may be "toys" but they cannot be ridden like this through our parks. It should be clear when they are bought that they are for use on private property. The Council's Trading Standards officers will visit any shop where these "toys" are being sold without giving people who buy them all the necessary information."
