Cllr Iain Donaldson
In a shock response to Lib Dem Shadow Trading Services Spokesperson, Cllr Iain Donaldson, Council Officers have revealed that remedial work to stop the rotting of the Great Hall at Manchester Town Hall may not have been successful.
Cllr Donaldson stated "For the last couple of years we have been assured that the work which has already been done should rectify the problem of salt seeping out of the stonework, but at a recent dinner I attended with senior politicians from around the country many of our guests were pointing aghast at the way in which the seepage (caused by dampness) has spread half way down the hall."
The extent of the problem was revealed in the response I received from Officers. "I took this up at a recent meeting, and have received a detailed response raising serious concerns about the work already done, and now needed" Cllr Donaldson added.
Now Liberal Democrat Councillors are calling for a cross party committee to be set up to oversee the preservation work and draw in the resources necessary to save this fabulous jewel in Manchester's architectural crown.
Shadow Finance Spokesperson, Marc Ramsbottom, who represents the City Centre on the City Council added "Clearly we need to identify the cause of the problem as quickly as possible, and then find the money needed for the work to sort it out."
Cllr Donaldson, has written to the Labour Executive member with responsibility for the Town Hall asking for an urgent report on the current state of play to be brought before the next meeting of the City's powerful Executive Committee.
