A survey of 4000 Manchester residents conducted by Council Officers shows that twice as many people, 37%, thought their neighbourhood had got worse overall in the last 2 years, compared to 19% who felt it had got better.
(Executive Summary, page 5)
The Best Value survey, produced by the Corporate Performance Team, also spells out which areas residents think have got significantly worse (where the got better score minus the got worse score gives a negative score of -10 or above). (Page 22/23)
They are:
Traffic Congestion (-56)
Crime levels (-47)
wages and cost of living (-40)
pollution (-35)
activities for teenagers (-34)
affordable housing (-27)
road and pavement repairs (-22)
job prospects (-16)
facilities for young children (-14)
Residents do, however, think that some areas have improved like Parks, Education and Shopping Facilities.
Liberal Democrat Leader Simon Ashley said, "When Labour were elected, they said "Things can only get better. Well, over the past two year, the people of Manchester think things have got worse overall under a Labour Council and a Labour Government."
Cllr Ashley added, "This report cuts through all the Labour party hype, spin and photo
opportunities. It also shows twice as many areas where performance has got
worse against areas of improvement. Labour should be ashamed of themselves."
