LIBERAL DEMOCRATS have slammed the road safety record in Manchester City Centre as 'shameful and unacceptable' following a recent report published by the Greater Manchester Transportation Unit.
The report reveals that Manchester has the most dangerous roads in Greater Manchester. A staggering eight times more people are injured in traffic accidents in the city centre than the average in Greater Manchester.
Commenting on the report, city centre councillor Marc Ramsbottom said "These figures are shameful and unacceptable and while obviously there are likely to more accidents in a busy city centre, not enough is being done to make our roads and streets safe."
He called on the City Council make the city centre safer for pedestrians by taking action on accident blackspots such as the Oxford Road and Portland Street Junction. "We must reduce congestion and ensure Pedestrians and cyclists can get around the city safely" he said.
Liberal Democrat Councillors have also renewed their call to cut accidents involving children by imposing 20 mile per hour limits around all schools in Manchester.
